fun in the bedroom

I know what you're thinking. And no, I'm not directing my decorating post in that way. (ha ha)

But, come on! What is the most boring room in your house? ... and I'm going to have to disagree with you if you don't say the master bedroom. The majority of your time is spent sleeping in that room, and other than that you're busy with life else where, so it's generally the room that gets dismissed the most.

Kids bedrooms are usually done because when you're expecting, the feeling is that you want your baby to be welcomed into a prepared world. Their bedroom is an easy start to that. Bathrooms tend to get done (organized at least) because you use them everyday. But the living room, I find, is the first place in the house to get organized and decorated because it's your 'living space'. You're there the most. That and the kitchen. Other people might spend more time in their kitchen, but I would not like to. I'm not a horrible cook, but cooking/baking is just not 'my thing'. I find it really exasperating that I have 6 littles who's needs are food, food, and more food. The husband too. Really, mostly the husband. *sigh* If food was not a necessity I'd be a happy woman.

Okay! Back to the bedroom! Now, I love snuggling up in my bed. That is my most favourite place to be. I'm an introvert through and through. When I've had a rough day and the husband gets home, that's where he sends me to have some quality time with me, myself, and I. A little quiet time can sure get me through the rest of the day. But when I go for my quiet time, I would really like to be able to look around and not stress out about how everything isn't finished. (I'm a DOER you guys, it just KILLS me inside!)

First, I'll give you a visual of our bedroom. Bed. Nightstands. Biggest dresser you've ever seen with TV on it across from the bed. Tall mirror. Tiny exposed closet. White walls. BOOOORING.

(Check out that bed frame the hubby made me though!)

(Best picture I have of the biggest dresser ever. And it has Georgia in it. How could I resist?)

I bought a fireplace mantle off of swap and shop (looooove swap and shop), for $40! DEAL! And because I had the idea in my head as to what I wanted to do with it, right away we packed it in our bedroom. On the wall. Beside the biggest dresser you've ever seen. Cluttering our space. Forever! (at least a year lol) So on Monday last week, I painted the trim in our room, and liked it.

Than, I painted the mantle to see what it would look like. And I LOVED it!

I couldn't wait anymore to finish that project, so I shoved the massive dresser out of the way and moved that mantle over. And what? ..... called the husband upstairs. lol. A lot of "Babe, Please!" 's later, he agreed to help me get this project out of the way.

I do have to say, I could do these projects by myself, but I am beyond grateful that my husband is so helpful and handy. Sometimes it is just easier to draw up my plans, than watch the kids while he gets stuff done faster. And sometimes, he'll think up some things that I haven't. It didn't take him a whole day but a good portion of the afternoon and evening. And guys! So far it looks amazing! Really, doing your own room is liberating! I suggest all of you to take some time and make your personal space less blah.

(It is so great that I can just draw up something and Mark can go along with it. Second drawing is the next part of the fireplace.)

I had already found the middle of the wall a few months ago, and hung our tv up on a wall mount.

Watching tv while nursing my babies in bed is my favourite past time. ;) But really, it's become a real help some nights when I need to stay awake with the littles. So, we needed a place on this mantle for the dvd player. Initially I was just going to settle on having the dvd player on top of the fireplace, like it was on the dresser. But I didn't like the way that looked. It really looked out of place, and messy. After throwing out some ideas, Mark agreed with me on making a shelf underneath the mantle so it would blend in. Not only just the dvd player, but all the cords could be concealed as well. Win, win! He cut all the pieces out, and I painted what I wouldn't be able to reach when it was all assembled.

He made a form for the mantle to rest against too, so that if we ever decided to put an electric fire place inset in, the mantle would be far enough out from the wall that we could do that. I was able to put on all the wood filler and now that it's had a day to dry hopefully tomorrow we will get the sanding and the rest of the painting finished.

Most of the hard work is done. Now we just need more time to finish. This week we were hoping to clean up Mark's shop and than moving all my refinished furniture out there and list it. We also need to clear all the stuff out of the mouse infested cabin so we can rip the insides out. Can I say #demoday ! We need more days in a week. Here's the rest of our pictures, the finished shelf, and how it looks with the cords tucked away.

I hope you like what we've started as much as I do!

P.S.

I'm going to touch on the trim colours that you guys helped me pick out! Obviously, the majority vote was light grey. So we are going with .... LIGHT GREY! Oh man you guys, it looks good. But. The hubby really loved the dark grey, and who am I to deny my husband. So that's why the bedroom is the dark grey. Do you like it? Pictures to come of the light grey trim on a later date :)
